I have an ''04 F-150 FX4 with approx 66k miles on it.  Bought it used and have had it since December 07.  I am experiencing major acceleration problems.  Does ok at highway speeds, but from 0-60 it is extremely sluggish and feels like the engine is missing somewhat.  Merging into traffic is scary.  A Ford mechanic is telling me he thinks it is the cam phaser.  Everything I have read about the cam phaser relates only to a knocking noise and nothing about acceleration or performance issues.  I really don''t want to pay for the cam phaser issue if that is not what is causing the acceleration issues.  Thoughts??

If the cam phaser was your problem, you would have a check engine light.  I would look at the fuel filter, fuel pressure, mass air meter.  Have you had any diagnosis done on it?  Other than just guess work?  This should have some diag time done on it if replacing the filter doesn''t help.  You didn''t say if codes had been pulled or check engine light on.

Yea, that what is strange.  No check engine light.  Everyone I''ve taken it to says the same thing.  Fuel filter has been changed and the tests you mentioned have all been performed.  No codes, no check engine light.  It''s been diagnosed by the service advisor, technician, and Ford shop foreman for a well respected dealer in central Texas.  The service advisor is my brother-in-law, actually, so I don''t feel like I''m being taken.  They all say the same thing....cam phaser.  I guess I was still hoping it might be something else that was less expensive, but maybe not.
