89 ranger starter/relay issues

Ok I got a 89 ranger was running fine (engine light comes on after a few mins of driving but no other signs to what thats about)

Questions:
How do I bypass the relay to see if the starter will turn over?
(useing pair of plyers)
Connecting the S connection to the power comming from the battery only causes the relay to click, and connecting the power to the connection leading to the starter does nothing, not even a spark. So does that mean the starter is bad or am I doing something wrong?

BACK STORY to the issue...........
I was driving it for around 1 to 2 hours in town not turning it off much maybe 1 or 2 times. Got home turned it off and then it wouldnt start. Instead the relay would just click and the cables from the battery to relay and then to starter were warm to the touch.

So I testing the battery it was found good, then the started it was fried so i replaced it but the relay still just clicked so a friend bypassed the relay or something and it started so i went and replaced the relay and the truck was starting.

Later that day I was driving again for around an hour or so turned off the truck like once and then went to the gas station and it went back to relay just clicking again.

So now im here looking for info
