1991 Ford Explorer O2 Sensor Replacement

Have a "41" code. Want to replace the sensor. It is mounted in the exhaust header just before the cc, pointed straight up, and along side the transmission. There absolutely no room to place a socket and breaker bar/rachet on top. I am certain it will be difficult to removed as it has been installed for 14 years and 100,000 + miles. Has anyone replaced the sensor and if so how did you accomplish the task? Any and all help will be appreciated.

Might not be as bad as you think. Cut wires at the tip of sensor or just break sensor off. Then use a 7/8 box wrench ot remove the rest. Installing the new a bit hard just be careful with it and don't tighten to much just a snug with the open end of 7/8 wrench.

Thanks for the response. Cut the wires, still cannot place socket on the sensor. Was able to place a 7/8" open end wrench but due to location unable to obtain any leverage to loosen sensor. Any tips?? Also, the sensor connector is located on the rear of the motor. Cannot reach to disconnect. Thinking about removing the inner fender well. Any more tips?? Appreciate any help!! Any idea what the labor charge is for a shop (california) to r & r the sensor?? Thanks again.

Replaced sensor. Cut 7/8" combo wrench in half. Used open end and "cheater" bar to break loose. Unscrewed by hand. For the connector, cut a slot in inner wheel well, pulled it back to make room and disconnected the connector. After a short test drive received another check engine light. Have to pull codes again. Will keep this post updated for those who need the info. Thanks again for the responses.

Thanks for the response. Disconnected the battery prior to removing the sensor. Replaced the sensor due to the trouble code (41) and the motor was running rich with black soot and gasoline smells. Plus the sensor is supposed to changed at 60,000 miles. This one had 101,000 + miles. The Explorer has been driven about 40 miles since sensor replacement. Still receive check engine light after 10 - 15 minutes of driving. The motor seems to be running smoother with no soot or gasoline smell. Tried to pull codes yesterday, but there a problem with the data port and no codes will pull. The reader is an Innova 3145 Ford reader. When I used the reader the first time it took about 10 - 15 attempts to pull the codes. Now there is nothing. I exchanged the reader, but no joy. It shutdowns about 3 minutes after pressing the test button. The relays click but the meter stays on 000 until it shutdowns. Would appreciate any help.

Not sure never heard of a Innova 3145,,,All I can thank of off the top of my head to check the car , Is go to the local Autozone , I understand they will pull the codes for free. I would try this an see if they can get any thing . If not then I would say from past experanice your vechile Computer is shot ... Thats usually a real good indacation the computer is no good .Any body else ?????[sm=feedback.gif] ( you did recheck your fuses ?,, I would disconnect the battery again, Touch both cables together for a minute if they reach , If they dont reach , try turning on the headlites for a minute, That will complety discharge the system, wait 15 minutes an hook up cables again an try it )... You gotta stand on your head ,left arm out ,wiggle 3rd toe right foot, an blick your eyes 20 times while singing yellow rose of Texas--- Ah foget that last part just kidding -------------

Thanks for the reponse. Went to the local AutoZone and Kragens. They check electrical; batteries/alt., etc., but do not hook up to the dtc and pull codes.

Yea, I don't think they read code preOBDII, EEC-IV can be read with volt meter and jumper wire. I have to get back with ya.
