Check Engine light is on it is red everything seems to be running ok. late for an oil change could this be the cause?

It is unlikely that just the oilchange would be the cause of the Check Engine light, but as cctxfish says,

It is yellow not red. is this emissions? 1997 i think 4.0 came on right after car was inspected. what is danger of continue to drive? how can i reset codes? disconnect battery?

well, first thing you have to do is go to somewhere like Autozone or Pep Boys or something along those lines because they will hook up a computer to your car and it will give them a code which will tell you what is wrong...depending on the problem, they can also reset it right then and there...otherwise, it may be a problem with a part, which they will be able to tell you, and you can get it all fixed up...

No. Something else is going on. Go to Autozone and they will read the code causing the light to come on for free!
