The last few days my headlights have worked on and off. Definitely not the bulbs (checked those).

If usually use the "auto" lamps switch for turning them on/off. But when they did not work, I tried the headlamp knob. Still nothing. Then after driving for about 10 minutes, they just went on. This morning, not even after 20 minutes did they come on. My first thought was "fuse" or possibly "headlamp switch". However, the parking lights are working, just not the headlights.

Can anyone confirm this? How do I get the headlight switch out?

Okay- I did some more checking and found a couple of more things.
1) The headlights will not go on with the dash switch.
2) If I pull on the turn signal indicator the hi-beams come on.
3) If I "push" the turn signal indicator to keep the hi beams on, they do not go on.

I checked the schematics for my electrical and found that there are two switches that might possibly be the problem.
1) the headlight switch
2) the multi-function switch that runs the turn signals and wipers (but also handles hi-beam/lo-beam headlights.

The headlight switch is $145 and the other is $95. Obviously, I would prefer not to replace the wrong one.

Has anyone ever had any issues like this and would be able to offer some assistance? I guess I could try a continuity test to see if there is power coming out of the headlight switch?

IDEAS? PLEASE!!!

I seem to be having a similar problem. The Taurus is a 2000 SEL, my wife's car, so I don't have first-hand experience with the issue, but it sounds like what she describes. If anyone has any ideas, I would be glad to hear them!

sounds like the multifunction switch..check and make sure your getting power to the headlightswitch all the time even when lights arent working to rule it out
