Regarding the "H" pipe found on the exhust system of the 5.0 powered 1987 (and later) Mustang:

There are four chambers in the factory-made "H" pipe, the two at the rear are convertors. Are the two at the front of the "H" pipe also convertors or are they empty EXPENSION CHAMBERS?

I bought a used "H" pipe at a performance swap meet (mistake #1, due to the nature of the swap meet the pipe probably didn't come from an unmodified (i.e. running overly rich engine). Within eight months the convertors were so clogged with carbon that the engine would barely run.

Upon expecting the "H" pipe I find that the front chambers are empty and am trying to figure out if the last owner had removed the packing (if they are convertors) or if the chambers are simple expension chambers.

(Note: If you are thinking of installing an "Off Road" "H" pipe on a street driven car, DON'T! That was my mistake #2. The resulting increase in exhust noise isn't worth it as it is quite loud. It's almost as bad as having header mufflers that end directly below the seat!)

Thought I'd put water into the "H" pipe to determine how much it was clogged by carbon -

No water was able to flow through either convertor. Hummmm, if water wouldn't flow then how could the exhust gasses flow?

Did see a trickle of water coming out from undoer one of the shields, gave me an idea as to why I was getting exhust fumes inside the car.

Those 2 front converters are suppost to have honeycombs in them. They were surely removed.
