Hey

I am new at this so hope I have the right area for a question.

I would like some advice on a 88 escort with a 1.9L. It has a throttle body fuel injection.

The problem: was a daily driver that ran fine untill one day driving home (35 miles) it started acting like it was starving for fuel. I had to keep pumping the gas petal to keep it going. When I got it home it died and now it wont start on its own.

It will start if I dump some gas down the throttle body. Then it will start and run but you have to keep pumping the gas petal. It will die if you hold the gas steady in one place or take you foot off the petal.

This is what I have done so far. I took the fuel line off at the throttle body and turned the key on and the pump does run and gas comes gushing out. So unless the fuel pump doesnt have enough pressure i was assuming the fuel pump was ok. I have replaced the fuel filter and the fuel injector as I thought the injector may be clogged. I am thinking about replacing the fuel pressure regulator but havent yet. I have inspected lots of vacuum hoses but havent found any bad ones yet.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong place as I am assuming this is a fuel problem but iI suppose it could be a sensor causing a wrong signal to go to the injector shorting itself of fuel. but I would appreciate any advice on this matter. It was a great car and had no prior symptoms.

Thanks

Larry

You will have to get a garage to hook up a pressure gauge to see if the pump pressure is getting too weak.
