1999 taurus 3.0L OHV. I have a loud ticking noise coming from the CMP sensor. I can disconnect the electrical connector to it and it gets a little louder. Any ideas? Thanks.

Can I replace the sensor or do I need to take it to a shop?

For the 12Valve engine, There are two parts to the sensor, the pickup part can be replaced by just removing the two screws and installing a new one, however, if the pickup has come apart and chewed up the rotating assembly that is installed in what use to be the distributor(I think it referred to as the stator assembly but don't quote me on that) you will need the ford special alignment tool to install another one. It is the sensor that is ticking and not a noisy injector? The sound of the injectors will change when you unplug the sensor as the PCM will switch to bank firing the injectors (fires in 2 groups of 3 inj.) because if no longer has the cam reference position to syncronize the injectors for multiport firing.
