I replaced the fuel sending unit on my 92 explorer two months ago....the fuel gauge was working fine. I did not have to undo the ground strap.

Today, I went out (with 1/4 tank of gas) and the fuel gauge went past the F (full) mark.
So, I filled the tank, drove for a while and the guage seems to still have a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? What did you do to correct the fuel gauge?

Thanks.

My 92 Explorer seems to run rough while in drive when stopped or a in park.

How can I determine if there is a vacum leak causing this?

Thanks

I am having problems with my 03 explorer fuel gauge. I filled up the tank and it went to 1/2 full and over the next 2 days eventually got up to full. I took it to the dealership and they said there was nothing they could due. They claim that the Sulfer levels in gasoline have been relaxed and now something is getting messed up in the fuel sending gauge. I am not sure if I buy that reason or not but not sure how to fix it.

That is EXACTLY the problem i'm having with my gauge!!! I just bought the XLT 2 days ago--it is also an '03. I wonder if there is a recall or TSB for it.

My '02 Explorer is having the same problem with the fuel quantity indication. When it's on 1/2 full and the tank is filled, it takes a couple of days for the gage to read Full. My dealership said there is nothing they could do, but the service manager said he had the same problem with his his Explorer and fixed it by adding Fuel System cleaner to two consecutive tanks of gas. He said the problem then went away.

I have added two bottles of Valvoline Max Life fuel system cleaner, and the problem seems to have fixed itself. Hope this helps. P.S, I think Ford should issue a SB on this because Fords seem to be especially prone this problem.. I have a Dodge Dakota that uses the same gas and no problems whatsoever.

I had the same problem.
Try turning the truck off( no listening to the radio on acc) or taking the key out of the ignition on fillup.
Works for me.

I found that there is a TSB out on this problem. It is TSB# 18121. date: 9/1/2004
I don't have access to the TSBs, but maybe somebody that does , can tell us what the recommended fix is.

this has happened to me with 04 I have -I ahve switched gas grades and it has stopped and it seems to be working fine, maybe try using a gas cleaner and see if that helps.
