First off I am new to this site. My mother-in-law has a 94 escort that won't start. When you turn the key, the starter relay clicks but thats the extint of it. Have replaced starter; starter relay ; and had battery tested (which was good)? Any help on this would help me greatly. Thanks , Daniel

I realize the by now you have probably got this fixed or sold the car but I thought I would post this in case someone else was having the same problem.

I was having the same problem and it took me a while to locate the Gremlin.

It seems that someone had installed an alarm system at some point and time on my car previous to my ownership. When they did they used crimp connectors and did not do a very good job on the wiring.

There is a wire that comes from the starter switch on the steering column that had only a few wires still connected so that when we would try to start the car the full voltage required to engage the starter was not getting through. If we would continue to try and start the car it would eventually turn over and start. This went on for about a year until it finally gave up and enough of the wires broke to the point that it would not even click any more (of course we didn't know that all of this was going on).

Once we found out what the problem was it was an easy fix. I removed the rats nest of a wiring job that they had done and spliced the main wire that comes from the ignition switch back together as it was originally (without the alarm wiring harness). Night and day difference, works great now.

I realize this may not be everyones problem but it may besomething similar. Check your wires that go to and return from your ignition switch. Look for poor connections, it is most certainly the culprit.

Good Luck,

Gary
