I've got a 98 ranger 2.5 I4. I'm currently having the same prob. I replaced the exhaust system but it didn't help. My next step is the cat converter also. Just ordered one ($170). My new exhaust does sound sweet though. (Gibson single pipe performance cat back exhuast system) goodson

The only thing that could rattle around on your cat. convertor is the heat shield. Use large hoseclamps and go around it, you will probably have to connect two togeather. I would buy enough clamps to put them both towards the inlet and the outlet. Your other option is to simply pull the loose heatshield off. It probably was a broken weld or two on one side and rattles when you hit bumps or when the engine is running at a certain rpm. You can start from the side with the broken welds and bend it back and forth untill it comes all the way off.

Just replaced my cat and the rattling stopped. Mine was rattling during acceleration and as soon as I took my foot off the gas, it would stop. I spent way too much on a direct fit cat which had to be cut anyways due to my new exhaust. just get a universal cat and save some money. DR11

Myself, I would either fasten or remove the heatshield that is most likley causing your problem before spending any $$$. Just my opinion, but why replace something that isn't broke?
