My daughter has a 1995 Ford Escort ....same problem - the cable. I had a 1993 Ford Escort (well back in 1993) and I drove it until it was totalled in a car accident and didn't ever have the problems my daughter has had with her car so its all new to me. Of course, I'm going to have to get it fixed for her -- can't have her driving around not knowing how fast she's going.

I'm going to order a speedo cable for my 96 today. $22, so not too bad. I'm getting really tired of that noise and bouncy needle over 50 mph. Hopefully next weekend I'll get a friend to help me with it. I guess I'll have to pull the steering wheel to remove the guage cluster according to the manual. I should check the fluid level in the manual transmission while I'm at it. I let you guys know how it goes.

My tachometer is reading really low. Is it electronic? I don't see any in the manual for the tachometer. I assume it doesn't use a cable.

Crap, no luck. replaced speedo cable and the damn thing is still making that noise and bounces. so it has to be the guage itself. maybe needs to be lubricated? me and a friend spent most of Saturday, the previous weekend. putting the new cable in. Pain in the ass!! that stupid clip you have to remove near the transmission end is almost impossible to pull out!!! really frustrating, doing all that work and the speedo still acting like that. really pissed!

Did you ever find the source of the problem? My 95 does the same thing and I'm kind of curious as to how to fix it...

Sounds like your speedometer cable is about to go belly-up. Mine did the same thing, and finally just bounced off the bottom a little, and then I gave up driving by the tach and just had it replaced. By the way, if you zero your odometer while the car is moving, this can bring on speedo problems.
