The Ford Excursion is the largest SUV in the
Ford lineup and was based on the Super Duty pick up truck platform. The Ford Excursion offered a powerful gasoline and diesel V8 engine as well as a V10 gasoline engine. The Excursion is quite spacious, seating up to nine passengers at one time. This large SUV was initially meant to fill the spot above the
Ford Expedition and the
Ford Explorer. Classified as a heavy-duty vehicle for commercial and rural use, the Excursion was exempted from CAFÉ fuel economy regulations. The Excursion was produced from the 2000 until the 2005.
Upon its release, the Excursion was thought to be too large for most people because it was too long to fit into the common garage. Sales were not good right out of the gate because the vehicle was so large and heavy that people were concerned about fuel economy, and rightly so. With rising fuel costs, Ford powered the 2003 Excursion with a more fuel-efficient engine, which was the 6.0-liter Powerstroke. Critics expected that Ford would discontinue the Excursion after the 2003 model year, but production continued until 2005. Finally, Ford pulled the plug when sales dropped even lower than expected as well as to make room for new models and productions of more fuel-efficient Super Duty pickup trucks.
