1962 Falcon timing?
hi guys, I picked up a 1962 Falcon last night and want to set the timing....how do I tell if I have the 144 or the 170 engine? And any info on the timing?
thanks! Geoff |
You might try, "Timing notes for Ford Falcon Six ".
take the vac. hose off the dist. and plug it off next put a timing light on no.1 spark plug wire. start engine. aim light at crank pulley and set timing to 6 or 8 deg. btdc.
turns out cyl one is dead, bad exhaust valve....time for a rebuild!
just rework the head is all that might have to be done. you'll know what engine you have then and you might get lucky and not have any thing wrong with the bottom end
we did a leak down and the one ex valve is bad, and all the compression is low, going to do rings, that one valve, and bearings....
If the rocker cover is blue 144 orange 170
Why are you going to rebuild the engine and only repair/replace one valve.
If the rings are worn , most likely the valves are not too far behind. Maybe I misunderstood your statement, if so pardon me ! There was a problem with those engines and blowby. I don't remember if it was soft rings or soft block. |
its red, its a 170 --- so, the suggestion is to do all the valves? Intake and ex?
It is best to do them all while it is apart.
