Can someone tell me how to remove the steering shaft from the gearbox. I need to sent the gearbox for repairs and I don't want to ship it with the shaft still attached. See picture.
Thanks

The six sided locking ring needs to be loosened, then turn the inner nut to unscrew the steering shaft retainer , and the shaft and bearings should come out of the box itself. The shaft will be required to set up the steering box preload etc. Unless you care to do the preload adjustments yourself, the wormshaft must accompany the rest of the parts. Can we ask why you are sending the assy out for repair?

I was losing oil at the bottom of the gearbox above the pitman arm. After removing It, noticed oil coming out from around the shaft. With that being said, the seals are bad. I know a bunch of things and just enough to stay out of trouble. I have made repairs to the power cylinder and control valve. I could buy a new gearbox but then I would need to do some whacking, by having this unit repaired all I have to do is bolt it back up.
PS do you do repairs on the side? I am boxing it up today.

You might give some thought to this.
That large nut that holds the pitman arm to the sector shaft of the steering box does come off and with a puller made for the job the arm can be easily removed from the shaft, need to punch mark the location of the arm on the splined shaft.once the arm is removed you can remove the seal carefully without damaging the sealing surface of the sector shaft and carefully install the new seal using a socket or piece of pipe coupling that will contact the outer circumference of the seal and drive it in to the same depth as the original seal and assembly is the reverse of removal.. It is unfortunate that you dismantled the assy when you didn't really need to . It would be a good idea to check a few shops and have them do that for you.
