Default 96 Bronco ignition control

I have had to replace the ignition control module at least 4 times. Does anyone know what would cause them to fail?

Welcome to the site..

Who’s modules are you using?
Have you checked the rate of charge?

The last I just put in was duralast. Not sure about the previous. Mine is remote mount and black. The older engines use a distributor mount and that unit is more expensive and gray. Are they interchangeable? Would the gray ones last longer maybe due to heat resistance qualities?

Rate of charge from the alternator? I replaced that about six months ago.

Any codes generated?
The remote mounted original Motorcraft unit was gray.
When they fail, are you having them tested to prove out a module for cause?

On the heat sink, are you cleaning/replacing the heat transfer paste? Most modules should come with a small blister pack to do the install. I’m sure you did, but have to ask
I’m sure an overcharge would be easily seen, but just something that comes to mind with multiple failures.

Ford moved the TFI off the engine because of heat induced stresses, if the sink isn’t doing it’s job it can cause fails. I’ve seen a lot of those mounted with no transfer paste installed...

Thanks, I did notice the old one was “dry”. (My son has had the truck so I wasn’t involved in the repair) I have not had the old one tested, I’ll do that. I jumped straight to replacement since that was the problem last times so never pulled a code. Thanks for the guidance, all very helpful.
