transfer case problems

hi, I own a 1988 bronco ll 2.9L 4x4 and I'm having some trouble with the transfercase. when I put it in four wheel it doesn't click in, like most that I have driven, and the lever will kick out of four wheel drive with the brush of a finger, even going on a downhill grade it will kick back out into 2 wheel drive. also I had the rear driveshaft out a while ago and it went just fine with just the front wheels for the two days that I was driving it like that, minus having to bungy cord the transfer case shift lever back so it would stay in four wheel going down a hill, but once I put the new driveshaft in and tried the four wheel it acted like it wanted to grind to a stop and didn't seem to be moving as smoothly as it should. I have asked around and heard everything from not being all the way into gear when I put in in to the transfer case being shot. the 4x4 light on the dash comes on but the low range light lights up a little bit as well. any information on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated. thank you

I would suspect a possible problem with the shifter fork in the transfer case. It could also be a problem with the detent system that keeps the rail in the selected position.
