I have a 1998 Contour 2.0L with an automatic. Where is the Vehicle Speed Sensor ? My speedometer is working on and off intemittently. Thought I would start with the VSS.

 

Manual shows it to be trans mounted.. Electrical/engine....

Found the VSS and replaced it with a new one, but I still have the same problem. My speedo works intermittent. Sometimes it will drop down to 0 and stay there, sometimes it will peg out at 130mph andstay there. Sometimes it works normally. Anyone have any ideas?

 

Start diagnosis of speedo problems by checking if the cruise control is working even with erratic or non function of the speedo. If cruise works then your sensors are okay. Most likely replace cluster. Sometimes plugging and unplugging the multipin connectors on the back of the cluster will give you speedo and other gauge functions again. Check for replacement from salvage yards as first choice.
