Default Odometer

On my '93 Vic I have one more issue, besides the ding ding ding.

The odometer and trip odometer quit. Speedo is OK. The dealer wants $700 to fix it. I told him it's a '93 and $700 is probably what the whole car is worth. He grinned and said $700. Plus they would have to keep the car for about 2 weeks while they sent the speedo someplace. Plus have a notary public swear that I was telling the truth. Blah blah blah. This is California.

Maybe I could pull an instrument cluster from the junk yard for $30. That is, if I can find a '93 with about 100k mi. Maybe pull my instrument cluster and send it to a speedo shop.

Any ideas on how to fix the odo? This won't be a problem until I go in for a smog check again. Then they'll catch it.

Thanks.

On a car that old, does Calif. REQUIRE the odo function? Perhaps that is why the dealer grinned.....

I'm in Alabama and we have no inspections whatsoever. If the odo doesn't work you simply sign a statement to that effect when you sell/trade the car.
