Default ?? Coolant temperature sensor for 1990 crown victoria wgn

my temperature gauge in my 1990 ford crown victoria wagon 5.0L 302 goes all the way to H when I turn my engine off. It never did that before it always went to C. While driving, it tends to go directly to the middle of the gauge and it moves with the turning signal when I put the turning signal on. It also tends to go up higher upon turning on the heat or lights. Would anyone know if possibly I need a new coolant temperature sensor.
Any reply would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
