Default Engine Swap Options

Hi,

I was just given a 1996 crown vic with all options, 64k miles, and a bad motor (runs but engine is full of metal shards, source unknown so far).

After a fair bit of research, it appears that given my finances (or lack thereof), amount of free time, and imminent need for a functioning vehicle that my best option would be an engine swap of some sort.

I have been researching this on the internet, however, and it looks like I should steer clear of post-96 engines if I want to avoid intake manifold failure.

My local JY has a 93 Lincoln Mark VII with the 4-valve Intech model 4.6... would this be a bolt-up swap (bolt pattern, wiring, etc) into my crown vic? 280 hp sounds nice...

Otherwise, is a 92-95 crown vic 4.6 a good choice?

TIA,
Jo

If you go with the Lincoln engine, you will also need all the sensors, wiring, ECM, and anything else that may be needed. I would stay with the 4.6 from the Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. If you can find one from a P71, you can have the best of both worlds. All you will need then is the donor motor and ECM.

Sounds good - do you know if anything extra is required to swap an early (pre-96) engine into a 96 car?

Also, are the old metal intake manifolds interchangeable with the newer plastic ones?

thanks for your reply,
jo

The engine should be a direct bolt in. Should not need anything extra. The 92 to 95 intake will have different sensors than the 96 and 97. If the sensors are in the same place, you can just swap them and go.

I just got an engine from a low mile 92 vic for $100. SWEET!

Are there any tricks useful for lining up the engine to the transmission mount? That's the only part of the job that worries me...

I usually pull them both together and swap the engine on the ground. Just take the torque converter bolts off before removing it from the car.

so I just got my engine out, but it looks like I'm going to have to swap my 96 timing cover over to the 92 engine... annoying but oh well. Thanks very much for your suggestions...

Default Transmission Issue

Some, maybe all, 1992 4.6 SOHC engines had the older C-4 bellhousing bolt pattern (early AOD) and may not bolt up to later transmissions. Just check on that when you plan a swap.
