1996 ford Econoline P0308 code
 

Hi,
i connected my OTC Genisys SPX to my 1996 5.8 E350 van and checked why my check engine light is on, saw the code, now i'm wondering, can i check what is causing the problem with this tester? how would i do it? anybody have one that could tell me a couple tips on it?

The code indicates a misfire condition in cyl #8. You still have to do the basic checks like compression, spark and fuel to that cyl. Doesn't your manual instruct you on these procedures?

Manual? Ohh i dont have one :)

I don't know if anyone with that model scan tool would be willing to supply the quantity of info you would need. Best to get in touch with OTC and obtain the manual for the model you have.

Many times the basic things are what should be checked first like the spark plug , the wires, dist cap etc.
A scan tool is a valuable assist , but without the specs for your particular vehicle you can only generalize with the readings you obtain. Some readings stand right out and if you have an idea where they should be and notice that they are much different then you can continue to diagnose in that/those areas. Really, you should always do the basic checks first!

Ok, just to clarify,
I can go through the system with the scanner and check whats causing the misfire?

I did a basic inspection yesterday, took out that spark plug, it was black, cleaned it, checked gap, then i checked all the connections and coated them with dialectic grease, checked the dist cap. Greased the connection points, started up the van and it appears to be running a bit smoother, infact its running perfect once its warmed up, do i have to manually clear the code?

A scanner will not tell you if the plug is defective or the wire is bad or if you have a vacuum leak at that cylinder. Those are the basic checks that I am suggesting you perform. A scanner with a graphing function will help you there.
