2003 E-150 turns on intermittently

2003 E-150 turns on intermittently
Hello everyone
Problem started over the weekend. Drove the van maybe 5 miles to a store then when we got back into the van, the van would crank but not start, I'm in a wheelchair, so had to leave van behind and wheeled it back home. Next morning went to get it towed and it turned on.
Two days later was even farther from home and same thing happened and was stuck with wheeling it back home. My wife returned to the van some six hours later and van turned on and she drove it home.
Van is at the mechanic and they cannot recreate the problem! The van is working fine.
suggestions anyone?

What engine in the van?
Did you happen to notice if the fuel pump was running prior to a start attempt or just after the key was released from the crank position? pump run time of a few seconds with the key cycled ON or after the starter is 'bumped' ?
