Some of that answer depends on where you live.
Certain areas charge more , some less. It might pay to shop around.

i live in queens new york.does that sound real high?

As I'm sure you already know , price is not everything.
Some places do decent work at a reasonable price and others will cut corners to make the most with the least amount of work. I'm sure you know which are the "rip-off" places in your area. You certainly must have had some work done in places you trust and know the quality of their work. Queens isn't as expensive as maybe Brooklyn or the Bronx and I could be wrong there too. Shop around.

I lived in Queens for three years and I had nothing but trouble with the big city shops. It may pay off to drive a couple of hours to Upstate NY or CT, and have the work done in a countryside shop where people are still honest and dedicated. I'm not saying that you can't find a trustworthy shop in NYC, it's just that I haven't found it while I've been there.

BTW, I got both ball joints done (myself that is), in about four hours per each side, in front of my house, using parts I bought on eBay. For my car, the joints were not replaceable so I had to replace the control arms as complete items. No biggie if you can handle a big wrench. A break bar comes handy. Just keep in mind that you'll likely need to redo the front alignment, especially if you're replacing the joints because of their high wear ... hth...
