Is an EGR valve supposed to go here?
 

Hello all,

This is a picture of the back of the engine in a 2004 E150XL with the 4.6. I had the engine cover removed to replace a coil pack. I noticed what looks like where an EGR valve should go (circled in blue), but the intake is partially blocking the hole. Could this be possible? The engine runs fine. There are no codes.

Looks like an EGR mounting flange to me.Your engine will barely or won't run at all with the valve removed.

It runs perfectly. Gas mileage is around 15 to 16. There is no pinging or rough idle. No codes. I bought this van 5 years ago with 81,000 miles on it. There were no service records.

It appears there is a little history for this vehicle that you were not aware at the time of purchase.

There is a good possibility some engine work was done that maybe was not "Up to snuff".

Things don't appear as the pix shows unless someone installed "Will fit parts".

Can we ask where you purchased the vehicle , or maybe why it was for sale?

I bought it off a used car lot about five years ago. It had about 80,000 miles on it. It was registered in North Carolina originally. It looks like it was used as some kind of shuttle bus. I've put over 70,000 miles on it and it appears to run normally. There are no codes. I don't know about emissions. State inspection in southeast Virginia doesn't require emissions testing.

As long as it runs good, ignore it.

I agree completely, but I can't help but be curious about how it got that way.

That's where your EGR tube goes
One ear must have broken off
It should make a noise like an exhaust leak though
