Help with new engine upgrade

I am having a problem in which my 93 E250 is not switching gears properly. The van has 320,00 miles on it with its original 4.9 engine. I am will be replacing the engine and the transmission. My question is should i start with the engine or the E40 transmission. The mechanics of the van were terrible into i got the van and did all the work needed to bring it up to good working order. The van is great now. My only thing is that i want more power. I would like to put the same 4.9 engine in. Now should i go with a 4.9 engine that claims to pack a little more punch because it comes performance parts for $2700 or should i just go with a stock oem 4.9. And what do you guys recommend, is about time to be thinking about replacing the engine and the transmission.NOTE: while taking off after a red light the engine revs high and then changes gears. It changes gears early when i let go the gas. Thanks everyone

Sounds like your tranny kickdown is screwed in too tight. I have a Clifford Research alluminum intake and headers to fit that straight six. It really made a difference in mine.
