Default 2005 escape intermittent transmission problem

I have a 2005 escape xlt auto 3.0 4x4 with a transmission problem seems to be only when it gets warmed up. After driving a few mins and then stopping and shifting into reverse or park etc none of the gears will engage. No movement and the engine revs like in neutral. Let it sit and cool down and it will go into gear but not for long once you stop again. I drained the trans fluid and added new stuff along with maybe a quarter bottle of seafoam trans tune I had sitting around. Drive it a little bit in the driveway shifting in all gears and eventually it stopped engaging like before. I don't know much about this vehicle anyone have any input on this problem?? Is the transmission just shot? Enough to just do a replacement? Is the job doable for a decent home mechanic? Any help is appreciated thanks!
