2009 Ford Escape Antenna and Automated Carwashes

So I just picked up my 2009 Ford Escape Limited AWD a couple of days ago. The car's pretty awesome, but I just realized that the antenna doesn't retract when you shut off the radio. Is there anyway to remove it for automated carwashes? I'm pretty sure you can't go through a wash with one of these...

Or does everyone just just the hose? Or one of those touchless washes?

Welcome to the site..

The antenna mast should just unscrew, but they use a light thread locker that makes the first time removing it a little snug.. There should be a 'hex' on the base of the mast and you can use a wrench to get it loose.. The solid antenna masts aren't as much trouble in a car wash as the older telescopic units were, and are generally OK for the wash.. But if it's a concern, removing it isn't a big task..

Interesting... thanks for the response.

I traded in a Corolla for the Escape. The Corolla had one of those thicker fixed mast antennas that are placed on the top of the car toward the back. Those appeared far more sturdy than the Escape's antenna, and I was told to take it off for car washes. Although, those were a bit more easy to unscrew, no need for tools there.

I have an 08 escape. I go through the "touch free" car wash about once a week. Its the kind where you drive up and the door closes and then the wash thing goes back and forth spraying water and such and you drive through the blower on the way out. Nothing ever touches the truck, it doesnt have those big washer thingies that regular car washes do.....sorry for the long description. It works great on my truck and I have never had a problem with the antenna.

During the winter I use the automated hand washes to remove the salt and road grime. I like the fact that I can control the contract and have high pressure spray to clean under neat and in the wheel wells.

I have used the No Touch types and the antenna is not an issue.
