Front brakes

I'm in need of alittle info. I have to replace the front pads and rotors on my daughters 2003 Escape, I need to know what size the Allen wrench is to remove the caliber, I know its smaller then 5/16 but not sure if it metric or not. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

RE: Front brakes

Next size down is 1/4" standard, but most cars now are metric so 5/16 is close to 8mm so try 7mm or 6mm.

RE: Front brakes

Well 1/4 is to small, so I guess were looking at metric. The largest one I have is 7mm so I guess I will go out and get a 8&9 mm. This is crazy, my chevy is cut and dry at using a 3/8 allen.
Thanks for your responce.

I think they changed it to more than once . My 08 uses a 9mm Allen

Maybe we can save you some problems up the road.
How many miles are on the Escape and did you change the pads on it before?
I ask these questions because a lot of folks think changing pads is quick and easy. It can be ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if you don't do it right !

OP

alan bolt head is metric for calipers. not sure what size it is on the 03 but likely 8mm. Metric alan sets are fairly cheap.

Inspect the calipers. Rebuild kits are cheap.

I would and do fully bleed the brake system with new fluid after pads & rotors

Take a look at the rear drums/shoes...they should be good but look. You likely need to back off the star adjuster to get the drums off.

If,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the calipers were never replaced before, this is the time to do it. They have been on there since 2003 and that is a long time !
If you choose to go this route , you can get rebuilt calipers and just exchange them. you will need at least a quart of brake fluid dot 3 or 4. Don't consider DOT5 , not good for anti-lock brake syst.
Have you ever replaced calipers before?
You make the decisions, we can only bring certain items to your attention and hope to be helpful.
