help w/bolt lengths water pump 1999 Escape 3.0

3.0 V6 Escape: Thought the longest one went in at the top, along w/another long one to its left. Had one more longer bolt and thought it was 2 down to the right while facing the pump from that top one, but.............the long one seems to stick way out (I am NOT forcing them). I believe these longer bolts hold the pump assembley to the block, but maybe I am missing something that would allow these longer bolts to screw in correctly?

can you stick a pick into the hole to determine the depth?

a few manufacturers do this and it can be hard to keep track of...I have the new pump sitting nearby and as I remove the bolts they go into place on the new pump.

water pump bolts

Thanks, yes, we have been trying to determine where the longest one goes and it just seems to be a freak! He took it off about 6 weeks ago and cant remember any washers/spacers either. I'm sure that about 3 of these hold the pump/assembly into the block, and they are the longer bolts, but when they lightly bottom, we have not tried any force. George

Any other ideas?

The long one just seems to bottom out way before the head hits the pump. We could shim it but w/rather figure it out. I asked if there was some sort of clamp/spacer holding it out, but he cannot recall. Maybe someone can point me to a drawing that will show the long bolt/s?

THANKS, George
