Default idle problems in 2001 escape

periodically when i start the escape, it will immediately die. its like it won't idle at all. i can hold the gas down and it will run fine. when i let off the gas it will usually backs down to 200-300 rpms an then dies. if i hold the gas for a few minutes and rev the engine a bit it will sometimes fix itself. i can usually feel it when it does. feels like someting just kicked in and started working. very subtle though. other times i have to drive it with one foot on the brake and another on the gas so when i come to stopsigns etc... it does not die. it usually only takes a few minutes and it starts working fine. does anyone know what this could be? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thx, lit

Sounds like IAC (idle air control) or possible TPS.. What engine? 2.0 or 3.0...
