Default Transmission 4th-5th gear "clunk"

Hi,

I've been experiencing a noticable "clunk" sound when shifting from 4th to OD in our '03 Escape XLT lately, then again from OD back to 4th. It doesn't always do it, but it's beginning to do it quite a bit. At first I could've easily mistaken it for road noise, but I've found that it's definately the tranny, so I'm at a bit of a loss as far as what to do, or how to troubleshoot it.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

sounds like a torque converter shudder. your trans does not have 5 gears. it ca be mistaken by another gear when the converter locks up. typically in a cd4e trans when the converter locks up and unlocks it can make a shudder type of feel like you are running over rumble strips in the road. sometimes a trans flush can make it go away for a short time but typically it is a waste of money. i would repalce the converter

Yeah, that's possible, although I don't know why it would only do this in the highest gears.

The sound I'm referring to is almost like hitting a small bump in the road.

Sounds like I'll need to have it looked at regardless.

when the converter locks up it can make a thump, bump or a shudder. it can make weird noises. it will only do it in the higher gears because that is when the converter locks up
