This Question makes perfect since to me. No, the 1997 2.0 sohc. Ford escort is Not a interference engine. It is a Freewheeling type. Interference refers to the non-ability of the engine to freewheel out of valve time. Interference engines DO cause damage if the timing belt breaks. Non Interference or "freewheeling engines usually will not
cause the valve to hit the pistons if valve timing is incorrect.
Ford escort is Not a interference engine. The valves will not hit the pistons if the timing belt breaks. In Most cases. If the valves were to
float at high rpm and the belt were to break or slip timing theres a slight chance this could result in valve train/engine damage. Ford recommends replacement
of the belt @ 120,000 miles. I would also request you consider
replacement of the tensioner/waterpump and idler at the same time and
remember to check the cam and crankshaft seals. If you ever need to change the belt.

I too would recommend replacing everything else while you are there. It is a time consuming job and all of that crap is exposed in one way or another. It only makes sense unless, of course you already had the water pump replaced in which case, you might as well had the timing belt done while you were there. Kind of a catch 22 right?
