2000 wont start, kinda
My step dads 2000 2.0 4dr auto 150K mil escort would not start.
I went out side to verify things and this is whatI found.
Just tried to do a typical start, turn the key to start. Well, nothing no sound while trying to start, nothing.
So I did this:
Turn the key to acc., everything is normal and on as it should be.
Turn key to on/run, the seemed to be a power draw or something, just seemed weird. The CEL (check engine light) was on and that was it. So I just waited for a few seconds to see if it would turn off. Then all the other normal cluster lights came on like they should if you turned the key to run but it took them all a few seconds to come on; airbag came on then off, seat belt light, and some others... but the CEL light stayed on.
SoI tried to start it again, it sounded like a poping noise like the starter wanted to engage but couldnt so I just kept tuning the key to see if it would engage all the way and turn the motor, it finaly did and cranked a bit longer than normal but did start, and the CEL is still on.
I drove it a bit a noticed it vibrated bad durring idle, and sounded like it had a cold air intake (like a noisy intake) sorry I cant really describe the sound, but it does not, somy guess there is a bad plug, coil, or fuel injector. I'll have to pull the plugs to see.
When I turned it off I tried to start it just to see what it would do, all lights came on like normal and started just fine and CEL on.
I think I'll replace the starter just because of the way it acted, its probably on the way out.
Is there a way to check codes with out the code reader? I have one I just have to go home and get it.
and what about it just doing nothing when turned torun? any ideas?
The're bad with their cars, just take them in when it breaks, but they do keep up on oil changes, so who knows when it last had a tune up.

Yes you can have the CEL checked....go to the nearest AutoZone, or Advance Auto and have them take a Reading...real simple....As far as the Starter is concern I believe you have a Bad Solenoid on the Starter...Replace it or the Starter...Try to get a Rebuild...they are cheaper, and work just as good.[sm=patriot.gif]
