Default 93 escort overheating

hello......i have a 93 ford escort stationwagon with a 1.9L with A/C and the radiator fan does not come on when the gauge reads almost to the Hot. if i turn on the a/c the radiator fan does come on. also if i disconnect the coolant temp sensor on the heater hose pipe under the electronic distributor it comes on. i have replaced the thermostat, the coolant temp sensor. for some reason this car does not have a eng coolant temp sensor on the back of the eng block. i have checked both hi and lo relays and they are good. any info greatly appreciated
