'97 Escort - Loping Idle
 

Actually it's a Mercury 'Tracer', which is the luxury Escort:) It has the 2.0L SPI engine.
No code light showing but when warm sitting at idle for 10-seconds it starts to lope dropping to 600 up to 900. When AC is on that is exaggerated to almost stalling. A trusted mechanic friend said it was most likely the IAC (Idle Air Control). Looks to be $80+. I have a Haynes book on it that has no testing procedure. Just replacing. Of course I would rather not dump money on an un-needed part (again). Is there a way to test these to be sure that is the problem? Would just disconnecting it's cable tell me anything?

To follow up here, I drove about a mile and back and had the loping idle.

Then disconnected the electrical connection to the IAC which made no change. Then I listened around the top of the engine and zero'd in on a hiss coming from the rubber-elbow-end-connector of the PCV tube to the valve cover. It seemed thin on the side and was collapsing a bit which had torn a hole where it was sucking air.

So I took it off and slipped a short piece of tubing inside it for support and then wiped the outside with rubbing alcohol and applied some Loctite Shoe Glue (Walmart) to the hole and let it dry overnight. The loping has disappeared! The idle, sitting still with AC cycling, stays around 700 rpm. So thank God for small miracles eh?:)

Now I'll see if I can dig up a replacement for that elbow because that fix will probably clog faster than original; the short piece I put in was kind of thick walled.

I have had that same issue with rough idle, My solution was a bent hose (not correct part) with small clamps. Worked.
Nice job though. I am still trying to figure out why my escort runs so rough while ac is on. If I turn it off, everything is normal....
