Default 98 Zx2 Going nuts

Well okay here its goes... its started out as just stuttering every once in awhile. then it progressed to the car sometimes stalling, then stalling mostly when i stopped for a little while. now everytime i stop at a red light. now whenever i get on the gas after idling for only a little bit the car just shuts off but right before it shutters violently.... now my friend thinks it might be the cadalidic converter, which it may be, but now the car finally said "service engine soon" after doint heis for a few weeks now. any ideas what the heck this might be? and if so could i fix it or would i have to have someone else at a mechanics shop do it and cost me alot of money??? please reply as soon as you guys can. thanks alot

Sounds like it could be the mass air flow sensor? symptoms sound similar. It would probably be a good idea to have check engine light diagnostic done 1st, because MAF sensor is not cheap, but is easy to replace.
