Gearbox oil
 

Hi

I have a question about my Ford Escort Zetec 18 16v (1996). In the past few days I have changed the reverse light switch (which is in the gearbox) and some oil from the gearbox came out. My question is I need to know what type of oil does the gearbox has in it so I can top the oil.

I dont know for sure...
but whenI was working at a shop most all of the cars took 10w30 in the manual transmission, I assume thats what you have. Some manuals do use auto transmission fluid. You should be able to refer to your owners manual under specs or capacities and it should tell you there.

The autozone website is saying for your caryou use Dex/Merc (Mercon V), if the fluid was red this is what it would be, if it looked like normal oil it was probably 10w30

:eek:Hello and good day to you: First may I ask if this is a Manual Transaxle (transmission) or a Automatic Transaxle. And when you refer to the "GearBox" are you referring to the Transmission Casing (housing) where the various types of gears are?

Also where is this "GearBox" located at. Inside the car where the Shift lever is?? or under the car.

I went to a local shop and asked the seller the same question here .. When he searched in the book he had told me that it suppose to take the automatic oil which is red, but when the oil came out it was transparent not red https://www.fordforum.com/image/s13.gif. Also my transmission is Manual.

My escort transmission is Manual , the gearbox is located under the engine and the shift lever is in the normal positon.

:eek: Ok Z: you are talking about the "Manual Transaxle"...the drive train of the car. First you need to find the leak, and where it is coming from...usualy the Manual Transaxle is Self contain, with very high Viscosity Oil...that rarely needs to be replaced.

Overhauling a manual transaxle is a difficult job for the do it yourselfer. It involves the disassembly and reassembly of many Small parts...Numerous clearances must be precisely measured, and if necessary changed...At any rate, the time and money, and effort involved in an overhaul is almost sure to exceed the cost of a rebuilt unit
My sugesstion...take it to the professionals ...one you can trust.

personally, id drain the rest out, and put some newer better **** in.
