Default Timing Belt Question 1st Gen

Hey Everyone!Heres my problem.I have an 1987 escort gt 1.9 efi ho with apx 180000kms.My timing belt broke as i was pulling into my drivewayD'OH.At least i avoided towing costs.Anyways i refered to my hanes manual, pulled out the starter, timing belt cover, altenator,You know the usual when i came to the pully.Hmmmmm the manual says to simply put a screwdriver in the flywheel. No problem.then remove the bolt from the pully.Well theres apx. .5 of an inch at most clearence. The only thing i can see is to drop the motor mount on that side.My question is this correct, will dropping the mount do harm?If anyone knows Id appriciate it.THANKS

You are going to need an engine lift. remove the front engine mount and lower the engine past fender well. You don't need a screw driver in the flywheel if you have an impack wrench. And you may need a puller to get the crank pulley off.

I am replacing the timing belt and water pump on a 94 escort with the 1.9. I got the water pump off fine and the timing belt is off everything except the bottom (crank) gear. My Haynes Manual says to wedge a screwdriver also. The only problem isI have no clue what/where to wedge it. The manual has no illustation or or explanation on doing this. It just says to do it. I have looked everywhere for a place to wedge a screwdriver and have found nothing. please help
