2000 Excursion-Old Age Issues
 

My 2000 Excursion is dying:
the cruise control is not working

the overhead display that tells the outside temp, mileage, direction is not working, except for occassionally when on a real bumpy dirt road...then it may come on, but will not come back on after the truck has been turned off.

the drivers side door lock buttons only work when I rock the button forward and backward a few times

the ignition switch can not be turned into accessory position (position 1)

I have checked the fuses already and all look good. I have taken the overhead piece off and checked wire connections to the overhead digital display and they are all tight.

If testing relays comes to mind... how do I do that? Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Are you familar with the use of a test light, and multimeter? :)

If not, I would be willing to explain their function, and do my best in coaching you along, step by step, in troubleshooting the problems.

Yes I am new to this and no I have no idea how to use a test light or multimeter...not that I have not heard the terms before but..... I would really appreciate your help. :) Thank you!

First: With a test light, and if you can, turn the ignition switch to the On position, ground the test light alligator clip to a known good ground, and probe with the pointed end of the test light to both terminals on all the fuses. Under dash, and under the hood. The test light bulb should come on.

Ok, thanks... I'll start with that and post what I find out :)

Pay particularly close attention to any fuse for the Cruize Control. It may be integrated with other circuits. Does anything else electrical on the truck not work, besides the cruize?

Use the chart on the covers to identify fuses. Owner's manual, and some repair manuals, will show diagrams or photos of the fuse box, and power distribution center.

fuses good... relays good... ugh! Just does not make sense to me cause cruise not working, overhead display that tells outside temp, mileage etc.... works when it wants to...I've removed the center display overhead and no loose connections there either. This truck makes me say hmmmmm and scratch my head too... I appreciate the suggestions! Any other ideas come to mind??? Thank you :)

There may be a recall for the cruise control wiring, and brake pressure switch. Give a Ford dealer a call, and with your vehicle's VIN they should be able to tell you if your truck is under that recall.

Take a look at the brake master cylinder. Is there a pressure switch like the one in this pic?

As for the overhead display, intermittent power going to the display, or a bad ground connection for the display could be the problem. A wiring diagram will tell you what power supply wire to probe for voltage to the display at its connector, and also the ground wire. I will see if I can find a wiring diagram for the display, and post.

The display itself may have a fault, and as such, would need to be changed as a complete unit.
