1999 Ford Expedition-- A/C clutch

I have an A/C clutch that locked up and broke the engine belt. The mechanic claims that the compressor may need to be replaced if the clutch can't be replaced by itself. Is this true or can the truck run without the A/C?

Some vehicles can be "Short belted" to bypass the A/C by buying a belt for a non A/C equipped vehicle. The A/C clutch can usually be replaced seperate from the compressor unless the shaft is damaged.
