2002 Expy...Low Power?

I bought my expedition used with 72,000 miles 1 1/2 years ago. It's 4WD and has the 5.4L Triton. Ever since I've had it, I'm not sure that it runs like it should. The engine noise seems kind of loud, sort of like a combination of a roaring/blowing noise.

Power delivery comes on strong only after 3500 RPM. Below that, it doesn't seem that torquey and the gear engagement seems a little funky. Does any of this sound normal?

Otherwsie, it seems to run fine. Gas mileage between 13-15 I suppose. Maybe a little higher if it's straight highway running.

To further describe what it feels like. I have a small boat (16') that weighs probably 2500 lbs or so. Maybe slightly more. When towing up hill for example...it struggles to accerlate...until I get to 3500 RPM. At that point, you can hear the exhaust note get deeper and she starts pulling like a bear. I don't quite understand that.
