2003 Expedition, ignition issues?
Hi, I have a 2003 ford Expedition XLT 4.6 4X4, and I'm having a bunch of electrical issues with it . . .
For a start, the directionals don't work (Hazards do work, and all bulbs light up), then the 4X4 doesn't work (Although it seams to be in 4 auto even when 2H is selected) and there are no messages about 4x4 in the instrument cluster either. The auto headlights don't work as well. I think I have a lead on these issues though, because I checked to see if the flasher relay is getting power to the "directional enable wire", and it's not. Which makes me curious what part of the ignition is not sending power. I have another 03 XP, with the only differences being, that it doesn't have a center console, and it has the 5.4 engine, so I switched the ignition switch, and the "key code receiver" (or whatever the technical name is) and still no difference. Also for reference, my truck starts, runs and drives perfect, with the exception of a weird transmission shift that I don't think is connected to the ignition issue, and it has a door ajar light in the cluster with all of the doors shut (I also checked to verify that all of the ajar switches function properly, and they do). Probably due to this door ajar issue, you can walk up and turn the radio on at any time, and nothing seems to disable it (except maybe the delayed accessory relay, but I have not confirmed it ever turns off). If you want me to verify something I have already checked, don't hesitate to say so, and please do add any input you have. If you have a wiring diagram for the ignition in this truck, please post it. I have been searching the entire web and am completely stumped on this issue, thanks in advance for any help, God Bless. |
Since we have to start someplace, suppose we take a look at the "Central Junction Box", located under the dash on the driver's side. (Glorified fuse panel)
Some models had windshields that leaked and allowed rust and corrosion to cause problems with the panel and its components. Take a look at the area for unusual rust and look the panel over carefully for any corrosion. Problems with this panel defied explanation with a series of unrelated problems. that were next to impossible to explain. If this appears to be the source of the problem, sometimes some folks replaced certain parts to get things working, but most wound up replacing the Central Junction Box itself. Let us know what you find, thanks. |
Isn't the Central Junction Box in the passenger foot well on these trucks?

Update:
Apparently the previous owner pulled fuse 18 because the rear blend door is bad, and clicks loudly no matter what . . . So that solved the directionals, but another thing I remembered, was that the ignition will not go into programing mode, and I switched the security module, with no change. |
