Default 01 Explorer rotted rear brake rotors

Upon State inspection I was told by my mechanic my rear rotors were badly rotted, beyond resurfacing and need replacement. They were so badly rusted there were large voids of missing steel. They looked like they came off a 50 year old rust bucket !.My car is an '01 with about 51K miles on it and is garaged. The tech said it's common for these rotors to go early on these cars..Any comments or opinions on this? Thanks, Joe
