2000 Explorer Blinker or electrical problem.....not sure
 

Frustrated and embarrassed! My left blinker randomly turns on (without my permission) and will not turn off unless I try to 'trick it' by turning on my hazards for a while (so as not to further embarrass myself as "the woman driver who won't turn off her blinker...") I keep hearing a buzzing electical-ly sound in my steering column around the hazard button. It is happening more frequently, especially when I forget and use my blinker like I am supposed to. NOW it is really messing with me and doing it at random...I guess I didn't mention before it all started when I would turn on my left blinker only, but now even the right one is doing it! Please help...don't really want to go to a dealer...no $$$. Thanks!

I would feel pretty confident in replacing the multifunction switch, on the left side of of the steering column. This switch contains turn signals, wipers, high beam switch, and hazards. Most likely you have some wiper or washer issues also.

Is there a way to test this "multi function switch"? That way I could know for sure.

I suppose you could wait for the smoke to escape.........these switches over time build up resistance and also wear causing the type of problems you described. If you can find a schematic and connector diagram, you could do resistance tests to be sure, or take the word of a 20 year Ford tech who has been in the business 33 years.

Have also seen several that melted the connector.

i agree w. bt i first thought replace switch. i have driven cdl trucks over 5 years, and have had to get a mechanic to replace turn signal switches. so it does happen, and bt sounds right on course.
