2000 explorer xlt man.fan speed control
 

i just bought a 2000 xlt 5.0 explorer and the fan speed control only works on high does anyone know what wouls cause this

You have a blower motor resistor that is bad. Cost about $15 and easy to replace. It is in heater box under dash in passenger compartment. Should be really close to blower motor and have 2 screws holding it in.

Thank you so much i knew it wouldnt be that bad just didnt know what was causing it and where it was ill check it out this weekend

Hi guys! My little sisters 2000 ford explorer (XLT) ac sucks. Want to know if there is a cabin filter that can be changed. I am going to do the obvious (recharge, freon ect....) I just did it on my 2010 edge... feels brand new!

We also had the same problem, replaces the resistor and it still don't work. Now what?

Hijacking a thread is frond upon because two people and have the same issue with a different solution. May I suggest you start a thread of your own for this.
As per your question, there are a few more steps if replacing the resister didn’t work.

Blower motor only working on high indicates a few things (to me), most likely reason, as stated by wheelsup68, a bad resistor. When the fan is on high no resistance is need, but as you lower the speed the resister comes into action to lower the voltage going to the fan. Keeping in mind that you could have a bad resister in a new box, there are a few other things to check.


Look at the plug going into the blower motor, are the pins shinny and clean or does the connector look heated or melted?
With the selector on medium speed do you hear or feel a humming at the motor and does wiggling the wires make a difference.


Do you have access to a multimeter?
