My Crankshaft broke had to replace the whole engine.

Here is the photo after my mechanic replaced the old engine with a rebuilt engine ($5000) . He said he has never seen or heard of this failure before, anyone else had this problem, seems like something that should never break at that location?

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer with 105K miles.
