Smile 2001 Ford Explorer Timing Chain issues

Hi,
About a week ago, my car started making a rattling noise and sounds like a Mac TRuck. I took it to the dealership and they charged me $100 dollars to do a engine diagnostic. The result (according to them) is that my timing chain came apart and that I would need a whole new motor and it would cost me about $5800 for the labor and the motor. Of course the car is not worth that much and I don't have that kind of money to shell out. The tech proceeded to tell me that I may have anywhere from 1 day to 6 weeks to 6 months before the motor goes out. Well, I am terrified to death to drive it now. Also, the car still starts up, sometimes it makes the loud rattling noise upon start up and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it starts quietly and then in the evening driving home it gets loud again.

I have several questions:
1. If the timing chain came apart, does that mean it is broken? And if it means it is broken then would my car start up ?
2. IS there a difference between "came apart" and "broken"? Referencing the timing chain.
3. Is there something I can do to "bandaid" the issue until I can save to buy another car? Add oil?

Please help. Please give me a honest opinion as I an very uninformed about what to do. Needless to say I am paranoid that while driving it will blow up on me.

Thank you.
