2002 Electrical/Brake Issues: Please Help!!!

I have a 2002 Eplorer XLT with 127,000 miles. I have never had a problem one with it. That is until now. I have a rapid shorting sound coming from the white box (sorry I don't know what it is called) located under the dash on the left. This is attached with a single bolt through the middle of it, and is located by the brake release. The only time I can get this thing to quit sputtering is when I press the brake pedal. I had a guy tell me it was the stop lamp acctuator switch, so I replaced that, but it didn't fix anything. Then I had someone tell me to get the cruise control recall done. I did that as well, but still I have the same problems. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

any codes or flashing engine light?

invest the 25 bucks in a USB powered OBD-II interface from EBAY so you can scan your vehicles using your laptop and avoid taking it to dealer..and we can help with codes..

Good luck
