Default 2006 Explorer engine Trouble Haed Gaskets

I have a 2006 Explorer and it overheated last week and stopped. I have water coming out the tail pipe and "maybe" water in the oil (looks soapy, lite yellow). I've talked with one person and he said you have to take the engine OUT to remove the heads. Does anyone know if this is true? Only has 46,600 miles. My HOPE it is just the head gasket. Any comments? I've got numbers of $1500. to $6000 for a new engine. ( its a 4 liter engine)
Thanks for your help.
Chuck
